Here is the poster for my end of term project (final year degree project) that ive been working away at these past few months. The final model was made using 3DS Max, which is a real achievement for me considering i'm completely self taught in the software. More updates coming soon, but for now enjoy.

Studies
Below are some studies I've been doing to help strengthen my skills.
This study uses a great photo I found of Gwen Stefani. I wanted to combine the skills i'm learning from the Andrew Loomis books with a colour study. I'm pretty happy with how it came out. The actual working size is 1742 x 1263 which allowed me to get a decent level of detail.
These film stills studies are from Fight Club. I varied the time I spent on each still to try and push myself at different stages. You can see the last one is really rough as compared to the first one. I found doing film studies really useful with helping me develop not only my perspective skills but also my composition skills.
I have some sketches i'll post at a later date, but for now its back to work!

Short Book Review- d'artiste: Concept Art and Digital Painting Techniques: Masters Collection Volume 1

Ever since last year i have managed to get my hands on some of the coolest and inspiring design and reference books.
I recently ordered two books that had been on my Amazon wishlist for a few months, d'artiste: Concept Art and Digital Painting Techniques: Masters Collection Volume 1.
Both books have amazing visuals and cover a range of concept design topics. d'artiste focuses on showing the work of 4 concept artists showing their gallery of work and tutorials on how to achieve similar results. Digital Painting Techniques has a wider range of artists who each give various tutorials on subjects such as creating a custom brush and creating a painting of a realistic looking nose. Both books are pretty thick with over 200 pages and d'artiste comes in a hard box like cover case. Although i tend to use Corel Painter for most of my work, I've found that most of the techniques and work flows shown in Digital Painting Techniques are Photoshop based but can be applied to both Photoshop and Corel Painter. As both books assume you have some basic prior knowledge of the software they use, its best you learn the basics before attempting some of the more complex tutorials.
If you're considering buying any of these books i'd say go for it. It only takes 1 small technique to have a big impact on your work.
